The Department of Education announced on Thursday that the Kearny School District will be eligible for Rim District Aid for the 2006 – 2007 school year. This will provide an additional $2.2 millions in State Aid funding for Kearny Schools for the next school year. In a bill passed in June 2005, Rim districts were defined as school districts in municipalities that are bordered on at least three sides by other municipalities with school districts classified as Abbott (special needs) districts and meet eligibility criteria. In the case of Kearny, the town is bordered by Harrison, Newark and Jersey City, all of which are Abbott districts. The inclusion of Kearny in the Rim funding was sponsored by State Senator Nicholas Sacco.
“I am especially grateful to Senator Sacco and outgoing Board of Education President Mary Torres who worked very hard to ensure that Kearny was included in the original RIM Aid legislation. This additional State funding will allow the school district to continue essential educational programs and at the same time should provide much needed tax relief for property owners in Kearny,” said Mayor Santos.
The Mayor added, “Kearny might never have been included in the original legislation or the current funding but for the willingness of Senator Sacco and our other legislators in Trenton to listen when the Board President and I pled Kearny’s case.”
